The Cult of Dark Knight Rises.

The recent DVD/Blu-ray release of the Dark Knight Rises reminded me of how I'd been struck by similarities between some of the shots in the film's trailer and artwork from Bernie Wrightson and Jim Starlin's Batman comic series The Cult. I started wondering if perhaps the plot of DKR was going to follow that of Cult pretty closely, with the character of Bane possibly standing in for Cult's villain Deacon Blackfire.

As it turned out this wasn't to be the case, but there are enough similarities in the plot and visuals to suggest that either Goyer or the Nolan brothers were under the influence of The Cult.

The Sewer hideout - both Blackfire and Bane are based beneath the streets of Gotham...

In both stories the sewers are used to spring a trap, on the army in Cult and the Police in DKR...

Batman visits a hospitalized Jim Gordon....

The villains hang the bodies of their victims in public...

Batman wields a non-lethal gun, the EMP rifle in DKR and the tranquilizer gun in Cult...

Batman takes back the city with the aid of a new hi-tech vehicle...
